The drink after work, and the line you didn't mean to cross

It usually doesn’t start as a problem. It starts as a reward.

One drink to come down from the day. Reasonable. Earned. Then it’s two, because one stopped doing the job. Then it’s most nights, because that’s just the routine now. Nobody decided this. It drifted.

You’d know if it were a problem, right?

That’s the trap. The picture in your head of “a problem” is the worst-case version: the job gone, the marriage gone, the bottom. So as long as you’re still showing up, still providing, still holding it together, it can’t be that.

But that’s not where it lives for most men. It lives in the quiet stuff. Sleep that isn’t really rest. A shorter fuse than you used to have. The math you do in your head about how much you actually had. The fact that you’d feel a little defensive if someone asked.

If you’re doing that math, some part of you already knows.

What this is not

This is not a lecture, and it’s not a label. You don’t have to call yourself anything. You don’t have to swear off everything forever to take an honest look at it. Most men never need to hit a bottom to make a change. They just need a place to be honest without it turning into a crisis.

What the work looks like

We get clear on what the drinking is actually doing for you, because it’s doing something. Taking the edge off. Quieting a thought. Filling a gap. Then we find better ways to handle that same thing, so the drink has less of a job to do.

We use Motivational Interviewing for exactly this. No one talks you into anything. We start from what you want your life to look like and work back from there. You stay in charge.

The honest part

You can keep handling it alone. You’ve proven you can. The question is what it’s costing you to keep proving it.

If any of this landed, reach out. One conversation. No commitment to anything bigger. Just an honest look, with someone who’s done this a long time.

When you're ready

Reading about it is a start. Doing the work is the rest.

If this sounded like you, one conversation is how it begins.
